Some tales of a noob in 0.0 follow. Those who live in 0.0 may officially correct, flame or bash me as they see fit.
I have been ganked several times in low sec. Just after I had enough money for an Osprey, I decided to take a break from mining and go ratting in 0.4. Well, just after I finished the rats and my shields were down some dude scrambled, attacked, ganked and podded me.
That happens to everyone and teaches (some of us) to warp away unless in a favourable position. And as a relative noob my position in PvP is unfavourable most of the time.
So that one day, when I was half asleep, I accept that mission that had a great revenue vs. collateral rate. Simultaneously with clicking "accept" I realize "**** - did I just accept a mission into 0.0? Then I realized that it was not only 0.0 but 28 jumps through 0.0, and that I had just spent about 50% of the cash I earned in the first weeks by grinding boring missions and by mining on the collateral.
That was probably one of the single best things to happen to me.
I bought a destroyer (the fastest and cheapest ship I could fly with enough cargo hold), insured it, and went to 0.0. Only thing I did is check the map, which is V-I-T-A-L. And then, after two jumps into 0.0, I was surprised how empty that actually was. Across 26 jumps in 0.0 I met one player, and a few rats at the gates, but either I warped before they could target me, or they didn't even aggro on my puny ship.
I made the delivery to an NPC station (these occasionally exist in 0.0), I made notes of the prices there and then flew arround another 20 jumps, exploring and outfitting my destroyer for mining. Well, undocking from the station where I bought my mining lasers I was smartbombed by some player ... docked again ... undock ... bombed ... docked ... rinse repeat. Their corp decided to camp the station. While I am sure I could have escaped (waiting a while if nothing else) I had them pod me so I'd not have to fly all the way back.
Lesson learned: Some parts of 0.0 are more empty than my fridge after an Eve weekend marathon. I am still in Empire, with similar reasoning - wanting to make enough ISK to afford loosing Harpy's or something in 0.0 - but it seems possible I am thinking atm to find a patch of 0.0 where you can rat and mine relatively undisturbed, even for a mostly solo player such as me (who maybe really shouldn't play Eve but WoW ).
The map still shows places where no activity happens in 24 hours, one day I plan to go there and place some secure containers, maybe with a cloaked ship, and then I can mine and rat, provided I stay away from other humans (stabs and fibers are your friend and a neccessary evil). The only problem IMHO really are choke points and entries into 0.0, and contested and densely populated 0.0 space and the hotspots arround NPC stations.
I also made the cash to afford my Raven in 0.0.
Take a fast frigatte, bolt on an afterburner 1, fibers, and go to 0.0. You can avoid all dangers except for combos of anti-warp-bubbles and webber things at the in-gate when you do it right, you escape almost everything. I had good fun escaping the warring factions there, looting the cans the war left behind, and sometimes even stealing stuff before they got to the cans when they killed rat battleships and stuff (with an alt, of course). And if you loose a ship, its a loss of about 10k, so thats virtually nothing.
Even when trapped that can be fun when you have nothing to loose, I remember a guy interrogating me, demanding to know what faction I work for and assuming I had implants. He told me to imagine a bright white light shining into my face and I told him to save his and my time and pod me already, and the only bright light I see will be at the end of a tunnel right before I see Elvis
Finally, don't believe anything said about 0.0 (which contradicts my post and this very statement ) but see for yourself. Just don't fly anything you can't afford to loose -----------------------------------------------------
